Windows Update
Is your Windows up to date?

Windows Update is a program Microsoft designed to allow the end user to patch bugs and update their operating systems.  It's already integrated into your system and its free to use.  These instructions should guide you through the Windows Update process:

Warning: Before downloading updates.
Some updates are known to cause  problems especially with some computer brands.  If you are unsure if you computer may have a problem, contact your computer person or computer manufacturer.

  • Log onto the internet with Internet Explorer.

  • Click tools at the top then Windows Update

  • When you click Windows Update it directs you to a website.  From here click Product Updates.

  • At this point it may ask you if you want to install the software.  This is usually shown in a box that pops up on the screen with a bunch of legal jargon.  It may take it a little while for this box to pop up so please be patient.  Say yes to this box to install the software.

  • Once you say yes to the installation it then checks the hardware and software on your system to see what is installed.  It will say Please Wait on the screen in a small pop up type box.  This process does take a few minutes especially the first time you update so be patient.

  • When the Please Wait goes away you should see a list of updates.  In front of every update listed is a check box.  Be sure to get all of the critical updates.  Note:  Some updates need to be installed by themselves.  Window update will prompt you when one of these files is selected.

  • Click on the download icon.  You can find this by going back up to the top or going down to the bottom.

  • After clicking on the Download Icon you get to another screen that summarizes what you have selected.  Review the list and click Start Download.  This starts the download process.  You may have to accept a license agreement.   The time varies on how many updates are needed and the speed of your connection.

  • When the updates have been downloaded they will automatically install.  Once installed you may be prompted to restart you computer.  Restart your computer and your done.
